La Prairie Beach
La Prairie Beach is located near the village of Baie du Cap, in the southwest part of Mauritius. This is one of the many beaches of Mauritius situated in the Savanne district.
La Prairie is a vast stretch of grass and beach land, located between Le Morne Village and Baie du Cap in the southwest of Mauritius.
With its picturesque backdrop of Le Morne Brabant in the distance, the area is a popular picnic spot for local families from the neighbouring villages, such as St Martin and Bel Ombre, but also from the larger nearby towns of Chemin Grenier and Souillac.
With a few exceptions, most of La Prairie beach is protected by the southwest coral reef of Le Morne, and the majority of La Prairie enjoys shallow, calm waters year round, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
The west parts of La Prairie are especially good for families with children due to the shallow waters, quiet bay like areas and protection by the coral reef.
Close to La Maconde near Baie du Cap on the east side of La Prairie, there is a break in the coral reef, and the waters here are affected by some very strong currents. The seafloor drops to a depth of 2000 metres less than a kilometre from the shore.
These conditions combined with the wind around the bay makes the area very popular with adventurous surfers – but due to the reef break and depth, the area is also popular with sharks. Always consult local surfers if you intend to windsurf or kitesurf in this area.
As for general beach facilities, La Prairie is somewhat limited. Due to its isolated location, there is no real infrastructure here, and the facilities are largely made up of mobile food vans. There are public restroom facilities located near La Maconde at the very east of La Prairie, just before you hit La Maconde and Baie du Cap.
Due to its lack of facilities, La Prairie is a beach where you need to be a bit prepared before you go, but it is still well worth a visit, as it is one of the last major undeveloped beaches of the south.
