Riambel Beach

Riambel Beach is located in the village of Riambel, in the south part of Mauritius. This is one of the many beaches of Mauritius situated in the Savanne district.

Riambel Beach is also known as Pointe aux Roches Beach or Pomponette Beach.

Tucked away in the south of Mauritius, the vast Riambel Beach is a haven for the adventurous beach trekker looking for a little break from it all.

With less than 200 metres to the coral reef, the waters here are rather lively, but although there are some strong currents in the area, there are plenty of bay like beaches here, with shallow, calm waters.

The area around the tiny Riambel village has large portions of sugar like sandy sea floors and shallow depth, creating an almost artificial reflection of the sunlight. Visit this beach around noon on a sunny day and marvel at the almost unreal turquoise waters.

The whole beach is completely unexploited, which is fantastic if one is looking for some solitude, but this also means that one will struggle in finding beach facilities of any kind.

If you are lucky, the odd snack van will be in the neighbourhood, otherwise head for Bel Ombre to the west, or Surinam and Souillac to the east and stock up on food and drinks.

West Riambel beach is home to a large and long forgotten and deserted bungalow resort. It is a very interesting area, and quite a temptation if one is into tropical style urban exploration, but beware that the grounds here are private property.

The deserted, decaying concrete buildings create a stark contrast to the colourful pristine beaches and palm trees, and the atmosphere is almost eerie.

The locals usually refer to the area as Pointe aux Roches, named after the black, rocky portion to the west, dividing Bel Ombre and Riambel.

Crossing Pointe aux Roches and the 500 metres or so of slippery black rock formations is doable but not advisable. The crossing involves trespassing private property and you will end up in the middle of the Bel Ombre hotel resort areas.

If you move in the opposite direction and head to the east for some 2 kilometres, you will soon end up at Riambel SSR Beach, which continues all the way in to the bay of Souillac.
